Stage 7, Saturday, May 12: Recanti - Rocca di Cambio, 202 km
The Race: A break went almost from the gun, but by the time the day's final and decisive climb to Rocca di Campbio began to bite, only Matteo Rabottini was left. Stefano Pirazzi bridged up to the fleeing Rabottini and the duo was quickly joined by José Herrada. Pirazzi was giving it all for the stage win and his speed was too much for Rabottini. In the peloton, Pink Jersey Adriano Malori was quickly tossed as the speed ramped up.
Androni Giocattoli riders kept the speed high for most of the ascent and the gap to the Pirazzi-Herrada break came down steadily. They were caught with about a kilometer to go. The final kilometer turned out to be a bear, stiffer and steeper than anticipated. 2011 Giro winner Michele Scarponi took off with Paolo Tiralongo on his wheel. Tiralongo came around for a big win. Ryder Hesjedal rode in 5 seconds later to take the overall lead.
Hesjedal is the real deal and has a genuine chance at winning the 2012 Giro. Will the team burn itself up keeping the jersey or will they let someone else take it for a while?

Ryder Hesjedal wasn't far behind.
The hill got very steep near the finish. Scarponi jumped but Tiralongo was much faster.
Five seconds later Ryder Hesjedal cruised in to take the maglia rosa.
Will Hesjedal try to keep the jersey all the way to Milano?
