Elia viviani

Elia Viviani wins his fourth 2018 Giro stage.

Weather at the finish city of Iseo at 1:30 PM, local time: 23C (73F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the SW at at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the late afternoon.

The race: At the slightly late 1:40 PM official start, the Giro was down to 159 riders. Victor Campenaerts & Louis Meintjes did not start the stage. Mid-way through the stage Tosh Van der Sande abandoned.

Here is the organizer's stage summary:

The Italian rider Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) won in a bunch sprint on Stage 17 of the 101st Giro d’Italia. It was the Franciacorta Stage – 155km from Riva del Garda to Iseo. Sam Bennett (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Niccolò Bonifazio (Bahrain – Merida) finished second and third, respectively.

Simon Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) remains the race General Classification leader, wearing the Maglia Rosa.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner, Elia Viviani, said: “We knew this could be a very hard stage and it was indeed. There were very strong breakaway riders but Bora controlled. We played a little bit with them. We did it right because it was the second last stage for sprinters and Bennett could have put my Maglia Ciclamino in danger. Once it came down to a bunch sprint, I asked my guys to lead me out. When Van Poppel anticipated the sprint, I knew it was too early. It was actually perfect for me. I could pass him.”

The race leader, Simon Yates, said: “There’s no easy day at the Giro. This was another hard one and it could have some impact on the coming mountain stages. I heard about splits in the bunch but I never knew who was caught behind. I hope everyone is tired because I’m tired.”

And here's the report from GC leader Simon Yates' Mitchelton-Scott team:

Three-time stage winner Simon Yates has retained the pink jersey for Mitchelton-SCOTT after an action-packed stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia. After a ferocious start that had countless attempts at a breakaway for the first 100km, the stage finished in a bunch sprint in pouring conditions in Iseo.

Resistant peloton:
No matter the composition of an attempted breakaway, it seemed to be chased down by someone. The resistant peloton made for an extremely difficult start and it took until the final 50km of the stage for a break of four to be finally given an advantage of over one-minute.

Sprint in sight:
With a small move, including Alessandro De Marchi (BMC Racing), Ben Hermans (Israel Cycling Academy), Wout Poels (Team Sky) and Luis Leon Sánchez (Astana Pro Team), at the front and less than 50km to go, the sprint teams saw another opportunity ahead of Rome.

Bora-Hansgrohe and LottoNL-Jumbo put riders on the front and kept the quartet within striking distance.  The race was back together with just over 10kilometres remaining, and despite late escape attempts it resulted in a bunch sprint won by Elia Viviani (Quickstep Floors).

Simon Yates - Race Leader:
“I was hoping for an easy day but there’s no easy days at this Giro, everyday has been difficult until now. Today was very fast day and a bit spicy with the rain in the final."

"I knew there was some splits but I didn’t know who was behind. The race was very fast, in the climbs and on the descents, so I’m not surprised there were some splits but it all came back together in the end.”
