Victor Lafay

Victor Lafay wins stage 8.

Weather at the finish city of Guardia Sanframondi at 1:40 PM, local time: 17C (63F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 10% - 24% chance of rain during the afternoon.

The race: All 177 stage-seven classified finishers started today's stage. The riders passed KM 0 at 12:53.

Race start

Race director Stefano Allocchio (who won Giro stage 8A in Foggia in 1985) drops the flag, signaling the stage's official start.

Midway into the stage, two-stage-winner Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) abandoned the Giro with knee pain.

Caleb Ewan

Caleb Ewan's Giro is over, but he is still planning on winning stages in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España.

Here's the stage eight report from winner Victor Lafay's Team Cofidis:

Sticky Buns Across America

At 25, the French rider Victor Lefay won solo this Saturday during the 8th stage of the Giro. He thus achieves the best performance of his career, his first victory among professionals. The Cofidis team continues its incredible series with a third victory in three days!

He savored it. In the home stretch of Guardia Sanframondi, Victor Lafay tumbled alone. He took the time to close his Cofidis jersey, raised his arms and revealed his dazzling face. The assurance of living a unique moment, a dream for all professional runners: to win on the roads of a Grand Tour.

The stage, starting from Foggia, was intense until the end. It was not until more than fifty kilometers before the breakaway of the day is formed. There were 12 of them in this group. Victor, he ran with intelligence to save himself as much as possible and remain as lucid as possible. Unlike the other breakaway riders, he managed to keep calm and cool until the last difficulty. It was only 2.2 km from the finish that he produced his effort on the toughest slopes of the final. This incisive attack allowed him to take the lead in the race and he kept it until the end.

Victor Lafay thus signs the best result of his career, his first victory among professionals. At 25, the native of Lyon had already won the Etape du Tour and was vice European champion in 2018. Under the colors of Cofidis, the young climber gradually gained strength. He discovered the demands of the grand tours last year at La Vuelta alongside team leader Guillaume Martin. This year, he made a name for himself by finishing 2nd in the 3rd stage of the Tour de Valence where he also took the best youngster jersey.

Victor Lafay gives Cofidis his 5th victory of the season. It is also the 3rd consecutive after the successes of Christophe Laporte on Thursday at the Circuit de Wallonie and Jesús Herrada at the Challenge de Mallorca. Finally, it should be noted that the Cofidis team had not won the Giro for 11 years and Damien Monier's victory in 2010 between Brunico and Pelo Terme.

Victor LAFAY, 1st: “It's just incredible! It was a very hard day and it was really not easy to take the breakaway. When it started, the peloton gave us 7 minutes, we were able to recover a little. I tried to be as focused as possible: I knew there were no 'real' climbers in the breakaway. I attacked less than 3 km from the finish and that allowed me to gain the advantage. I still have trouble realizing, it's completely crazy!"

Nicolas EDET: “This is great news for Victor and for the team. For the past week, we've been revolving around victory with Elia or with me. We know that Victor is a great talent who understood that the work was going to be rewarded. He is a serious runner who has gradually gained confidence. He has enormous abilities, punch and he has everything to earn more. To win in a grand tour is a dream for all runners. Well done to him!"

Jean-Luc JONROND, sporting director: “There is a great feeling of satisfaction, it's great and a winning return for the Cofidis team on the roads of the Giro. Despite a fall at the Buckles d'Ardèche, Victor was in great shape and we suspected he would have a good season. The team once again worked very well today as Nicolas Edet, Natnael Berhane and Rémy Rochas took turns trying to integrate the breakaway. We had studied the final with Victor and he had a clear round. Opening your counter among the pros with a stage of a grand tour is great. And I am convinced that this victory calls for others!"

Cédric VASSEUR, general manager: “It is a wonderful day for Victor and Cofidis. This victory rewards the work of a whole team, riders and staff. It proves that the whole group is now able to compete at the highest level. The objective on this Giro was to win a stage with Elia and other riders. The Giro is still long and I'm sure we will have other opportunities to stand out. Three victories in three days: we couldn't ask for better!"
