Weather at the finish city of Messina at 1:30 PM, local time: 22C (71F), fair, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 20% chance of rain declining to 8% by 3:00 PM.

Info about the route: A short stage with just an uncomplicated climb up Portella Mandrazzi, mid-course. From Catania to just outside Taormina, the roads are quite wide and mostly flat, but twisting and winding, with only a few straight stretches. After leaving the coastline, the route takes in the long Portella Mandrazzi climb (avg. gradient: 4%), followed by a lengthy descent that will lead the peloton to the northern coast of the island. Over the final 70 km, the stage follows the shoreline. The roads here are quite wide, flat and straight, with a few urban areas along the route.

Final kilometers:
With nearly 4 km to go, the course leaves the trunk road and kicks up into urban Messina. The route continues along broad city avenues, initially downhill, then up again until the 1,500 m marker, and then takes a short descent. There is one final bend 800 m before the finish line, which sits on 7.5 m wide, flat and asphalt road.

The race: The stage started a bit earlier than usual for one this length, about 11:50 AM so that it would finish about 4:00 because the race caravan has to take the ferry across the strait to Calabria.

Mark Cavendish & Caleb Ewan were among the sprinters who could not get over the Portella Madrazzi climb with the peloton and therefore could not participate in the sprint.

Here's the report from fourth-place Davide Ballerini's Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl:

Day five of the race had just one hurdle on the course – Portella Mandrazzi, a 19.6km climb which was to be tackled by the riders midway along the route travelling to Messina, where the peloton returned after five years – but it ended up playing a huge role in the final outcome.

That was because several teams decided to ramp up the pace seven kilometers from the top of the ascent, putting many sprinters on their limit and forcing them to spend a lot of energy in order to try and hang in there. Mark Cavendish did his best to remain in the bunch, but was distanced on the steepest part of the ascent, and despite a fully committed team that chased hard on the descent to reduce the gap and bring him back in contention, it soon became clear it won’t happen as the numbers were on the peloton’s side.

Sprint responsibility passed onto the shoulders of Davide Ballerini, and the Italian from Cantù came close of scoring another top 3 for the Wolfpack at the Giro, concluding just outside the podium the mass gallop won by Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) on the long finishing straight in Messina. Mauri Vansevenant came across the line in the same time and remained fifth in the overall standings ahead of Thursday’s stage, which will see the riders return to the mainland.
