Weather at the race city of Alès at 2:20 PM, local time: 10C (50F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is currently a 1% chance of rain, rising to 23% at 4:00 PM.

The race: Here's the report from winner Kévin Vauquelin's Team Arkea-B&B Hotels.

Riding his brand new Bianchi Aquila RC, Kévin Vauquelin secured his overall victory in the Etoile de Bessèges by winning the traditional time trial in Alès.

Thibault Guernalec, 4th in this final stage, finished 5th overall.

Kévin Vauquelin:
This victory in the overall classification and in the time trial are very satisfying results, both personally and for the Arkea-B&B Hotels team. I had quite a big lead in the overall classification this morning, so it gave me a good idea of what to expect on this final stage. It's a reward for all the hard work I've put in all week and over the winter. I had a bit of revenge to take here on the Etoile de Bessèges, after a special week and a very trying day yesterday. To finish like that is really good. I'm pleased to have inaugurated the Bianchi Aquila RC time trial bike in such a good way, with this success. Thibault Guernalec also set a good time, so those are obviously positive signs. It shows that it's a fast bike. I really enjoyed riding it today. It bodes well for the rest of the season.

Thibault Guernalec:
My main objective for the week was to win the overall classification of the Étoile de Bessèges through Kévin Vauquelin. With all the ups and downs we've been through, I also wanted to do well in the general classification. It did me good to do the ascent of Mont Bouquet at full speed, to redo things I'd done before. It's good for my head for what's to come. We have a new time trial bike developed by Bianchi which is great. It saves an incredible amount of time compared to the old model. It's bound to pull everyone up. The Bianchi engineers have done a great job. We had no doubt about it, we'd already tested it in the wind tunnel and now we can see how it performs in the race: it's a victory!

Yvon Ledanois, Sports Director:
Winning the overall classification of the Étoile de Bessèges was the objective I set myself before setting off. It's good to have achieved it. Now we need to keep up the momentum. We've got a big season ahead of us. We have a very good Arkea-B&B Hotels team, as we've seen all week. Kévin Vauquelin is a leader who is always there. He needs to keep up this momentum because it's going to be a long season. Coming back to this Sunday's time trial in Alès, I'm also pleased to see that Thibault Guernalec was there (4th in the stage, editor's note). He was motivated yesterday after Mont Bouquet and finished 5th overall. I'm really happy for him. And on the subject of equipment, we ‘christened’ our new Bianchi Aquila RC time trial bike with a victory. The feedback from the riders is very positive. It's also a good thing for the future.

Weather at the town of Nasvacelles, on the route, 8 kilometers from the finish at 2:20 PM, local time: 4C (40F), rain, with the wind from the northwest at 14 km/hr (9 mph). The rain is forecast to continue all afternoon.

The race: This stage was also shortened. The riders faced freezing cold and incessant rain. The web site procyclingstats.com explained the race organizer's plan to handle the weather: "Before the start, race organizers decided to remove a loop in the parcours around Saint-Quentin with the second KOM of the day, the Côte du Rte de St-Maximin. During the race, it was also decided to cancel the third KOM of the day, the Côte des Concluses, and to shorten the stage by another 16 km."

Only 64 riders finished the stage. Team Equipo Kern Pharm did not start.

Here's the report from stage winner and new GC leader Kévin Vauquelin's Team Arkea-B&B Hotels:

Kévin Vauquelin has unlocked his 2025 victory record, as well as that of the Arkea-B&B Hotels team on the road. The young rider from Normandy won the 4th stage of the Etoile de Bessèges at the summit of Mont Bouquet on Saturday. Ahead of the final time trial, he is now the overall leader.

Kévin Vauquelin:
It rained today from the start of the stage. I had team-mates around me with incredible mental strength. Without them, I don't know if I'd have managed to hold out, and I'd like to thank them for that. I was so cold I couldn't even feel my hands at the end, and all I wanted to do was get to the finish line. I'm happy to finish the job for the Arkea-B&B Hotels team. In difficult conditions like today, I'm also happy that I didn't collapse mentally. I'll say it again, but it's thanks to my team-mates who pushed me to the limit. We can all take our hats off to each other: me, my team-mates, but also the whole peloton.

I really wanted to race to respect this event, the Etoile de Bessèges, its organisers, the volunteers, my General Manager, Emmanuel Hubert, and all our partners, Arkea and B&B Hotels, who support us. I also had a little revenge to take with this finish compared to the last two years. I'm now leader of the overall classification, and tomorrow there's the time trial in Alès. It's a discipline I love, and I want to show myself to be at a very high level in the time trials. What's more, we've got a new time trial bike from our manufacturer Bianchi (the Bianchi Aquila RC, editor's note), and I hope to be able to unveil it in the best possible way on Sunday.

Yvon Ledanois, Sports Director:
The aim was to protect Kévin Vauquelin ahead of the climb to Mont Bouquet, sacrificing 2 or 3 riders to control the breakaways. This was done very well. The whole Arkea-B&B Hotels team did a great job around Kévin today. Whether it was Anthony Delaplace or Arnaud Démare to ride straight away, the young Pierre Thierry or Baptiste Gillet, Florian Sénéchal and Thibault Guernalec, the latter of whom made a great climb.

We've achieved our objective with this stage win. We came here to win the overall classification. There's still one stage to go and we'll be talking about achieving our objective tomorrow evening, at the end of the final stage in Alès. We need to stay focused and ride a good time trial, both with Kévin for overall victory and with Thibault Guernalec, who can hope to finish in the top 5 or better.

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

Weather at the start/finish city of Bessèges at 1:40 PM, local time: 8C (46F), cloudy, with the wind from the south at 21 km/hr (13mph). There is a 90% chance of rain.

The race: The exccellent website procylingstats.com posted this explanation of the day's events: "Due to an incident with a vehicle entering the parcours, the peloton stopped after 12 km of racing. After some deliberation with the race organisers, it was decided to neutralise the Col des Brousses and its descent, to remove the last local lap in Bessèges (reducing the distance from 164.05 to 136.2 km) and to restart the race at km 22. Several teams, however, decided to not restart and left the race."

Here's the race report from stage winner Arnaud De Lie's Team Lotto:

Arnaud De Lie had already predicted that it wouldn’t be an easy race. A tough course combined with dreadful weather at the start proved him right. But no one could have foreseen just how chaotic the race would become. After 12 kilometers, the race was halted due to yet another issue with vehicles on the course, leading to total confusion. Some teams decided to withdraw from the race, while others wanted to continue. There was no unanimous decision among teams and riders.

"I initially got into the car to warm up. Over the radio, we heard that if we didn’t restart, it would be the end of the Etoile de Bessèges for good. That really hit me. Rider safety comes first, absolutely. A car on the course is unacceptable. But at the same time, races like these can only continue to exist because of the riders. It’s thanks to these organizers that we have the opportunity to live our passion. Baptiste (Veistroffer, red.) and I lost contact with the rest of our team amidst all the chaos. We were already moving forward again, while the others were preparing to head back to the team bus, just like many other teams," De Lie explained. "It was pure chaos."

Once the race officially restarted at kilometer 22—after several more kilometers of uncertainty and a neutralized section—the team decided not to pull its two riders from the competition and to keep racing. "It was a dilemma for everyone, but in the end, I didn’t overthink it and just kept going. At first, we were about 20 riders, but eventually, around 60 continued. I hope I made the right choice. I also did it out of respect for the organizers—they have an incredibly tough job. And I won, in this weather —which I love—after such a crazy day. It felt a bit heroic. I’m really happy with this victory."

Weather at the finish city of Marguerittes at 2:20 PM, local time: 13C (55F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 14 km/hr (9 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier continues to lead the general classification at his home race after finishing a solid third on the second stage, despite coming from far back in the last 200 meters in what turned out to be a hectic, crash-marred sprint in Marguerittes.

The day was once again controlled by the Soudal Quick-Step boys, who kept the five-man breakaway’s gap in check, reeled in the attackers before the last ten kilometers and also made sure of bringing back the riders who tried to open a gap on the 5.2km-long Côte Cabrières, the most important hurdle of the stage, which the riders had to tackle twice.

In the final kilometers, a series of roundabouts and tricky corners disrupted the lead-out trains that were jostling for position, but despite finding himself far from the front, Paul generated an incredible speed and managed to clinch third, behind Søren Wærenskjold (Uno-X Mobility), who took the win. The bonus seconds he captured on the line helped Paul extend his buffer over the next rider in the standings to eight seconds ahead of Friday’s hilly stage three.

Weather at the start/finish city of Bellegarde at 2:10 PM, local time: 12C (53F), sunny, with the wind from the north at 31 km/hr (18 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from winner Paul Magnier's Team Soudal Quick-Step.

Paul Magnier enjoyed a perfect start to the season, winning on his very first race day of the year, just like he did in 2024. If back then he came out on top in Mallorca, at the Trofeo Ses Salines-Felanitx, this time around the 20-year-old from Grenoble took the honours in front of his countrymen, after prevailing at the end Étoile de Bessèges stage 1, in Bellegarde.

The day was almost completely flat, the only difficulty coming in the final kilometer, where the riders had to tackle a 600m ramp averaging a stinging 9%. It was there that Paul patiently waited for the right moment to make his move, unleashing a ferocious sprint 150 meters from the line to rack up his sixth pro victory on the way to becoming the third-youngest rider in the history of the race to take a stage.

Paul Magnier will start stage two in the leader's coral jersey.

“It’s important for me that I won my first race of the year, just like last season. It gives a lot of confidence and shows how hard I have worked in the winter. I want to thank everyone who supported me after my crash last September – team, family, friends, manager – it’s thanks to them that I got to win here in France in front of my fans.”

“The finale was very steep, but I began the climb in a good position thanks to the team’s excellent work. They did a perfect job today and I’m grateful for that. The key was to be patient and I was until I decided to give everything when it mattered the most. I’m proud of my performance and of this success. I will do my best to keep the leader’s jersey on Thursday and maybe try to get another victory this week”, said Paul, who will sport the yellow jersey during Thursday’s hilly stage two, where a second-category climb placed inside the final 15 kilometers could make things spicier.
