The race:

The Challenge Illes Balears/Ciclista Mallorca has historically been a series of four 1.1 races held in late January-early February on the Balearic Islands in the western Mediterranean sea.

Since 2023 there are five races.

While each race is an independent 1.1 ranked competition, until 2010 there was a General Classification for an overall winner as well.

Dirty Feet: Early days of the Tour de France

Weather at the finish city of Colonia Sant Jordi at 2:20 PM, local time: 16C (61F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west-northwest at 23 km/hr (14 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from winner Martijn van den Berg's Team EF Education-EasyPost.

Marijn van den Berg closed out a massive effort from his EF Education-EasyPost teammates with a sprint victory at the Trofeo Ses Salines.

The Dutchman kept his cool in the final kilometer and then launched up the left side of the pack and left all of his rivals behind him. As he crossed the finish line, Marijn swung his arm in the air and let out a whoop of joy. His teammates soon gathered around to celebrate with him. This victory was the best way for Marijn and his leadout squad to start the season.

“First race, first win is really good,” Marijn said after the finish. “In the sprint, I just tried to focus on my own race. We knew that it was a little bit windy today and made a plan to stay on the left side, where we were more covered from the wind. We all did really well to focus on the plan. For us it was a perfect situation. The sprint went really well and I could keep them in my wheel.”

This win belongs to James Shaw, Rui Costa, Jack Rootkin-Gray, Michael Valgren, Owain Doull, and Vincenzo Albanese, too. As soon as the commissaire dropped his flag at the start of the second day of the Challenge Mallorca, the whole team committed to Marijn’s cause, trusting that the winner of the 2023 edition of the race could pull it off if they got him to the final kilometer at the front of the peloton.

A strong wind was blowing off of the Mediterranean, making their work hard, but the team kept in front, keeping the day’s breakaway in check, as they rolled around the southern corner of the island, winding through olive groves between dry stone walls.

As the finish line approached, riders surged ahead, but EF Education-EasyPost stuck together, chasing them down with Marijn in their draft. All of the work that they put in over the past weeks of training together in Mallorca has paid off.

“The team did a super good job getting me out of the wind,” Marijn said. “We trained really hard here. We did a training camp with the team and know the roads quite well now. You can do everything here. For me, it's perfect. I always like training and racing here. I’m super happy, and tomorrow we go again.”

Tomorrow, EF Education-EasyPost will take on the Trofeo Serra Tramuntana, which crosses the mountains on the northwest coast of Mallorca.

“It's a different race, of course, but I will do my best to be up there again,” Marijn says.

Weather at the start/finish city of Palmanova at 2:20 PM, local time: 15C (59F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 32 km/hr (19 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from winner Jan Christen's UAE Team Emirates:

Jan Christen took the fourth win of the season for UAE Team Emirates-XRG with a classy solo victory at the Trofeo Calvia on day one of the Challenge Mallorca.

The Swiss talent played a clever tactical game, taking advantage of a lull in the group to bridge across solo to the two leaders, Frederick Wandahl (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana), at -10km to go.

With no immediate answer from the reduced peloton the trio worked together to maintain a lead, before Christian hit-out solo with an explosive attack at -1km to go and was able to cross the line solo with his arms aloft.

Antonio Morgado also continued to show his form with 3rd place as he put in a strong shift covering the attacks behind for Christen.

Christen : “I’m super happy, I have really good condition and the first two races were already good with Morgado taking a win and now me as well.

"Today, Tudor pulled all day at a super-hard pace and I didn’t have the best legs. So I tried to save as much energy as possible until the end and then make one or two good moves. To get away and win the race is amazing.

"I did some super good winter training in Gran Canaria, and could make another step forward. Taking a win already is amazing and I’m super happy. My thanks must also go to the team who did an excellent job.”
