Chris Froome riding to his stage 18 victory.
Weather: At Sallanches at 1:45 PM, it is 27C (81F), partly cloudy with the wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6mph). There is a 30% chance of thunderstorms at 5:00 PM, when Chris Froome is scheduled to begin his ride.
The Race: Sam Bennett was the first rider off at 10:51 AM local time and race leader Chris Froome last, at 4:59 PM. Fabian Cancellara pulled out of the race yesterday to prepare for the Olympics. Bora-Argon 18 rider Shane Archbold also quit the Tour after crashing badly on the Col de Mosses yesterday.
Here's the organizer's stage explanation:
Chris Froome confirmed his absolute superiority as he won the uphill time trial from Sallanches to Megève as he rode 21 seconds faster than specialist Tom Dumoulin. He significantly increased his lead in the overall ranking. With two Alpine stages remaining, Bauke Mollema is at 3.52, Adam Yates at 4.16, Nairo Quintana at 4.37 and Romain Bardet at 4.57.
Successively, Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18), Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal), Leigh Howard (IAM Cycling), Alexis Gougeard (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) had the provisional best time. Gougeard's performance was an interesting one as the French rookie had a crash with 100 metres to go. The young rider from AG2R-La Mondiale had put a lot of efforts in order to reassure himself after he had a few disappointments. Edet has a similar spirit as he also felt unlucky in his quest for the decisive breakaways in previous stages. Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), Romain Sicard (Direct Energie), Jérôme Coppel (IAM Cycling) bettered Edet's time. Coppel was the first rider to complete the 17-km course in less than 32 minutes.
Spain's national champion for time trial Ion Izagirre (Movistar) took the lead as 75 riders were yet to finish. He remained on the hot seat for one hour until Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) took over for only one second. It was another story when Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) set the new provisional best time, 41 seconds faster than the Belgian, after he put his name on top of all rankings at the three different check points. Dumoulin's average speed was 32.83km/h.
Chris Froome (Sky) took a cautious start as he clocked the fifth time atop the côte de Domancy (km 6.5) where fastest climber Richie Porte (BMC) took the 5000-euros Bernard Hinault price to recall the badger's victory at the world championship in Sallanches in 1980. Hinault, Eddy Merckx and Jan Janssen who also won the rainbow jersey in the city of Savoy followed Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) in the super VIP car. It encouraged the Frenchman to score the fifth best time on the finishing line and retain that same place overall. Froome gave it all in the second part of the race to claim his second stage win in the 103rd Tour de France after his downhill solo effort to Bagnères-de-Luchon in the Pyrenees.

But Christopher Froome is enjoying extraordinary form this month. He won the stage and extended his lead...
For which he gets to wear the coveted yellow jersey.
Only 17 out of 206 individual time trials of the Tour de France since the first one in 1934 have been contested uphill. The first one was up the Mont Ventoux on 13 July 1958. It gave the go to Charly Gaul's quest of the yellow jersey. There hasn't been any stage of this kind since the timed climb to L'Alpe d'Huez in 2004 that has remained one of the most popular stages ever in terms of number of spectators, even though they're always hard to quantify.
Stage 18 from Sallanches to Megève showcases the hill of Domancy in its first three kilometers. That's where Bernard Hinault won the world championship in 1980. There'll be a 5000-euros prize for the fastest rider on that climb. But there'll be more kilometers to cover and more climbing, although not on a regular scale. The changes of rhythm will be the key to win the race with a steep section towards the end.
Chris Froome is a hot favourite but not the only one. He said he might suffer after the fast start of stage 17 in which Richie Porte has showed his great form. The Australian is a challenger to stage favourite Tom Dumoulin who is not involved with the overall classification and therefore can pick his days. The Dutch champion for time trial wouldn't discard a third stage win prior to going to the Olympics. Bluff or not, Froome mentioned another potential winner at Megève: Nairo Quintana. Such an uphill time trial suits the pure climbers.
In any case the winner will remain in the history as the first to win a stage in Megève. The famous ski resort of the Savoie has never hosted a Tour de France stage before. The first time had to have an exceptional flavor.
