The race: Brilliant, just brilliant! In what looked like a planned set-piece, Contador escaped on the penultimate climb, shed his fellow breakaways and crossed the line alone to become the Vuelta's leader. Alejandro Valverde was closing fast but was six seconds short. Joaquin Rodriguez was out of gas and couldn't respond to either Contador's nor Valverde's attacks and finished tenth, more than two and a half minutes behind Contador.
