Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The race: A break that eventually had about twelve riders went clear, the first of them escaping on the first lap. Others bridged, but the move never had a big gap.

As rain began to fall on the riders, one by one the escapees were dropped from the break. Eventually it was down to just three, Oleg Zemlyakov, Max Schachmann and José Rodriguez. The trio had less than a half-minute with a couple of laps remaining.

They were rounded up on that lap. Others gave it a shot, but it was in the race's last minutes, as some riders fell on the slippery cobbled pavement, that Frenchman Kevin Ledanois drove his bike hard, gaining and keeping a small gap to the finish to become the world champion.

Italian Simone Consonni had chased with all his might, but was unable to close the gap and earned the silver medal.

The French got first and third with Anthony Turgis getting the bronze.
